I recently checked out a few postings on another immigration lawyer's blog called www.nationofimmigrators.com. It is nice to see that there are other people as frustrated as I am with the lack of "Services" inherent in dealing with United States Citizenship & Immigration Services. Judging from Angelo's bio I am guessing that the title of his blog is a play on the idea of America as a Nation of Immigrants.
However, I think it also could compare to the 1988 Rap Album "It takes a nation of millions to hold us back" by Public Enemy. The album is described on their website as follows:
"Rarely has fear, anger, paranoia and anxiety been so masterfully compressed onto a record's grooves. "
That sounds to me an awful lot like the current immigration debate in the United States.

This story should not surprise anyone who remembers the news photograph of Elian Gonzalez. Still it is a story that the average American probably hasn't heard.

Selective Service Registration for Male Illegal Immigrants
This is from the Selective Service Website:
ATTENTION, UNDOCUMENTED MALES & IMMIGRANT SERVICING GROUPS!
If you are a man ages 18 through 25 and living in the U.S., then you must register with Selective Service. It’s the law. You can register at any U.S. Post Office and do not need a social security number. When you do obtain a social security number, let Selective Service know. Provide a copy of your new social security number card; being sure to include your complete name, date of birth, Selective Service registration number, and current mailing address; and mail to the Selective Service System, P.O. Box 94636, Palatine, IL 60094-4636.
Be sure to register before your 26th birthday. After that, it’s too late!
Selective Service does not collect any information which would indicate whether or not you are undocumented. You want to protect yourself for future U.S. citizenship and other government benefits and programs by registering with Selective Service. Do it today.

The weirdest thing about this is that illegal immigrants cannot join the US military. If they could, I suspect many young men and women would because they would be on a fast track to US citizenship. Still, men under twenty-six who think they might become legal residents and someday citizens should know that failure to register for Selective Service can be a set back to gaining US Citizenship.

Council on Foreign Relations Report -- Immigration Reform Needed
A widely publicized report has been issued by the Council on Foreign Relations regarding the need for Comprehensive Immigration Reform in the United States. The bipartisan task force signing off on the report includes members such as Jeb Bush and former Clinton Whitehouse Chief of Staff "Mack" Mc Larty.
The task force argues that our national economic and foreign relations interests require that we improve our present immigration system. They focus on increasing immigration that helps innovation, entrepreneurship and technological advancement; improving enforcement to discourage employers from hiring unauthorized immigrant employees; and encouraging foreign exchange and immigration including from areas of the world that are not particularly friendly to the United States.

Help Wanted - USCIS Designated Civil Surgeons
To my knowledge, there are only two physicians in the entire State of NH approved to administer the USCIS immigration medical examination.

-- and while I have no reason to doubt that they do a fine job of administering the exam, that is simply not enough physicians for the population they are serving. You might also notice if you are familiar with NH geography that one physician is located in a city that borders Massachusetts and the other is only minutes from Canada.
Is there no one in the Greater Manchester Area that can perform an immigration physical exam? How about the Capitol region? No one on the Seacoast or the Upper Valley? It doesn't appear to be that hard to sign up. Here are the requirements as listed as at USCIS.gov
Doctors interested in being registered as a Designated Civil Surgeon should submit the following to their local District Office:
A letter to the District Director requesting consideration
A copy of a current medical license
A current resume that shows 4 years of professional experience, not including a residency program
Proof of U.S. Citizenship or lawful status in the United States
Two signature cards showing name typed and signature below
I challenge any physician associated with Elliot Hospital or Catholic Medical Center or Concord Hospital or DHMC (or any smaller facility or private practice) to become the next new Designated Civil Surgeon in the State of New Hampshire.

New ICE I-9 Business Compliance Initiative
Yesterday, Immigration Customs and Enforcement (ICE) released a press release stating that it has targeted 652 businesses nationwide for investigation of corporate I-9 files. This initiative is labeled a "bold, new initiative..." for ICE.

Boomers may be headed for a Bummer
There are some people in every demographic group who take the position that we as a country should be drastically limiting immigration, but it sure seems to me like the over 50 crowd (Boomers and their elders in the Silent generation) are the driving force behind the nativist political discourse of these times.
It is ironic in a way because those are the very people who will feel the pinch of reduced immigration first. As the baby boomers start to reach retirement age in ever larger numbers -- they will face a shortage of physicians, nurses and other health care workers. Nursing homes and other areas of elder care already have higher than average percentages of foreign born workers. Even if the U.S. government can find a way to keep social security and medicare solvent (which is going to be difficult given the dwindling numbers of U.S. workers per retiree) -- without steady or even increased levels of immigration there will not be enough workers to care for the health needs of American retirees even if they are insured.
According to Census estimates the 65+ population will gain approximately 24 million people by 2025. The 18-64 population, however, will only gain 14 million people over the same span.
Today there are roughly 5 persons of employment age (18-64) for every person 65 or over -- by 2025 that ratio will be closer to 3 to 1. How do you suppose the economy and by extension the baby boomers' retirement investment accounts will perform over that period?
